The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG)

EM-ABG master program is a graduate level program recognised by the European Union's Erasmus Mundus actions, aimed at students wishing to specialise in sustainable management of farming.

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high-quality training both in terms of scientific knowledge and competencies. The EM-ABG program is recognised by the European Union's Erasmus Mundus program, which offers scholarships to students from third countries and Europe, and to scientists from third countries (teaching staff).

The objectives of the European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics are the following:

â–º to provide European graduate level training, for both Europeans and non-Europeans;
â–º to improve the accessibility of European training for young diplomees from all countries.

Teaching is provided by six excellent universities located in Europe and aimed at giving a European dimension to breeding and genetics knowledge. Several of our university partners have an important breeding experience in developing countries and have formed a consortium with expertise in breeding and genetics. It is this expertise that has made them qualified leaders of this European training program.

Consortium members:
  • Wageningen University (WU), The Netherlands (coordinator)
  • University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria
  • Christian-Albrechts-University (CAU), Kiel, Germany
  • AgroParisTech (APT), Paris, France
  • Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden
  • Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), Aas, Norway.

The European EM-ABG Masters focuses on the use of quantitative and molecular genetics for breeding with the following concepts:

  • Understanding and measuring genetic variability (statistical genetics)
  • Molecular genetics and bioinformatics (genomics)
  • Designing and evaluating selection programs (breeding)
  • Understanding intra-animal biological relations

The EM-ABG program aims at providing knowledge on the study of farm animals (ruminants, pig, poultry and horse), fish and pets (dog, cat, horse) along with natural populations (in zoos or in the wild). For farm animals and aquaculture species, the genetic concepts are examined in a holistic perspective, considering the role of breeding in the production system and the use of the world's zoogenetic resources for the society's and the agricultural world's needs. Knowledge on breeding and genomics includes themes like animal welfare, sustainability, quality, food security, environment as well as other thematics concerning animals used in sports, hobbies, guide dogs, ....

The young diplomees can work in Europe or elsewhere with national or international breeding organisations.

â–º  2011 Erasmus Mundus scholarships

Beginning in 2011, a limited number of Erasmus Mundus B category scholarships is available (2011: 8 scholarships), they may be awarded to Master students selected by the consortium that fulfill the following required criteria:

- Students from EU countries, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein
- Students with EU nationality but living outside of the EU
- Students from outside of the EU but who have lived at least 12 months during the last five years in the EU
- Scholarships covering expenses and living expenses (500 €/month) for 24 months

The program is also open to students who have personnal scholarships or their own funding.

Self-financed students from the EU may participate in Erasmus-Socrates exchanges and may also be awarded a reduced subscription (-50%).

Deadlines
February 1: registration deadline for EU students wishing to apply for an Erasmus Mundus B category scholarship
