EGS-ABG: The European Graduate School in Animal Breeding and Genetics
© European Commission The Erasmus Mundus graduate school in Animal Breeding and Genetics was recently accredited by the European Union. This program is intended to train future geneticists, specialists of animal breeding. Genetics is an essential component in responding to today's increasing demands for food resources while decreasing the impact of farming on the environment and biodiversity.
The EGS-ABG Graduate school is the natural follow-up of the European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics. The different majors offered by the school are the following:
â–º Sustainable animal selection and population management
â–º Understanding phenotype-genotype relations
â–º Statistical methodologies in genetics and bioinformatics
Four institutional partners are accredited to deliver PhDs:
- AgroParisTech: project coordinator (Paris Institute of Technology for Food Life and Environmental Sciences)
- Aarhus University (Denmark) - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at Uppsala (Sweden)
- Wageningen University (The Netherlands)
INRA at Jouy-en-Josas and the GABI unit, in particular, have been working closely with AgroParisTech on this initiative.
The project includes five other associative partners:
- one representative from the Forum of Farm Animal Breeders (EFFAB) based in Wageningen
- two academic associative partners: Iowa State University (USA) and Melbourne University (Australia)
- two other partners, one from the ILRI (International Livestock Research University in Kenya) and one from the World Fish Center based in Malaysia.
In addition to organising international doctoral training courses, the program will allow the hosting of doctoral students. Five cyles will be financed over nine years, the first beginning in 2011, then 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 for four year contracts.
